Stainless Steel Soap Bar

smk_edge_soap_barThis stainless steel soap bar has been popping up in magazines now and then, and I am going to be ordering my bar soon to test it out. Basically, it has been a kitchen tip for some time that stainless steel neutralizes garlic, onion, and fish odors. The tip has been for a while and people often attest to rubbing a stainless steel utensil, pot or pan to get rid of smells, and even cooks have been known to rub their hands on stainless steel sinks to get rid of odors.

From a little searching on the internet there isn’t too much science to establish whether stainless steel is more effective at removing odors and, if so, how much it actually does, so testing it out is usually anecdotal at best. Personally, I can’t imagine that if I were to work an hour with fish or onion it would take out all the odor as my skin would have absorbed a lot of smells.

One simple explanation that I did come across on the Chef2Chef website was that odors cling to negative ions. Stainless steel, however, has more positive and less negative ions so it attracts those smelly negative ions away from your hands. Of course the Edge stainless steel bar from Sagaform recommends rubbing the bar in your hands under running water, which I am sure will take some of the smell away too, but it is probably worth the $14.95 if it works — or if you want to do it on the cheap just take out that pot or pan and start rubbing.

Anyhow, the bar has a nice sleek design (it is Swedish design), so I will be ordering it to try it out and report back after I chop up enough onions and garlic to give it a go. You can also purchase the Sagaform Edge Odor Remover Metal Soap from Amazon.com if you’d like to try the product. The going price seems to be around $15 on the web, but Amazon has free shipping.
